Stressed about getting a residency position? Don’t worry. We can help.
We know that finding out if you’ll get a residency position is stressful, especially if you’re an IMG. You’ve spent a lot of time studying for USMLE and preparing your applications for a residency position. On Match Day, you’re wondering if all the hard work is going to pay off. The night before, your mind is racing with questions:
- Did I say the right things during my interview?
- What if I ranked my programs incorrectly?
- Are my scores on the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2CK good enough?
Take a deep breath. Don’t panic! We believe in you. Recently, the National Resident Matching Program surveyed program directors to see what they were looking for in applicants seeking a residency position.
Here are a few highlights from the survey. See what you can do today to increase your odds of scoring a residency position.
- The deadline for early registration is November 30. Turning everything in early is best!
- Get a high score on your USMLE Step 1 and Step 2CK.
- Pass USMLE Step 2CS.
- See if you can get a letter of recommendation in the speciality you’re interested in.
- Your personal statement matters a lot. Your passion, professionalism and commitment to your field should shine through.
- Interact politely and professionally with everyone you meet during your interview. Bonus tip: After an interview with a residency director, write a thank-you note.
- Work in a laboratory or do volunteer work to improve your application.
- Stay calm if you have to go through the SOAP process. There could be some last-minute spots that hospitals will need to fill. Start calling.
