Don’t underestimate the importance of the USMLE Step 2 CS exam.

You’ve thought about Step 2 CK and even purchased your review books and materials to ensure a stellar score. But have you thought about the USMLE Step 2 CS? Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you schedule your Step 2 CS exam:

The USMLE website encourages test takers to schedule before May 31st of the calendar year you plan to test in. Make sure you are flexible with your testing dates to ensure you can secure a spot. Additionally, if you’re proactive about checking the appointment website frequently. Sometimes cancellations or additional dates are added, and you may be able to re-schedule.

Prepare to make a financial investment

It is also a substantial financial investment to register for the USMLE Step 2 CS ($1,280-$1,550 for 2017 registrations, depending if US Senior or IMG) and pay for travel, lodging, and food. You can save money by scheduling your exam both during a time that optimizes your studying and minimizes travel costs (e.g. picking a date away from major holidays, which has numerous flight options from your current location).

Determine how much time you need to study

Although many US Seniors do not spend a substantial amount of time studying for USMLE Step 2 CS, it is important for IMGs whose first language is not English to become familiar with the expected interview style, physical exam, and computer testing interface.

According to USMLE Performance Data, 82% of examinees from non-US/Canadian schools passed the USMLE Step 2 CS on their 1st attempt compared to 97% of examinees from US MD schools.
